TEACHING BASIC SHAPES: Star shape, tuck shape, straddle shape, pike shape. 'Make your body into a star! Now tuck into a ball!' Body shapes are the building blocks.
INTRODUCING ROLLS: Log rolls (rolling sideways), egg rolls (tucked), and forward rolls (with careful supervision). 'Chin on chest, hands on mat, push over!'
BUILDING SEQUENCES: 'Start with a balance, then do a roll, finish with a jump!' Three elements make a simple sequence. Children choose their own elements.
FOCUSING ON CONTROL: 'Move smoothly from one action to the next. Finish in a still balance.' Control and quality matter more than difficulty.
