Watercolour River Landscapes
Watercolour painting naturally connects to the theme of water and rivers while developing fine motor skills and artistic expression.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Creative Arts
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Create a watercolour painting of a river landscape
- Use wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry painting techniques
- Mix colours to represent water, sky, and earth
Materials
- Watercolour paints and brushes (various sizes)
- Heavy watercolour paper
- Water cups and palettes
- Photographs of rivers and landscapes
- Sponges for texture effects
- Masking tape
Instructions
Display photographs of rivers in different settings (mountain streams, wide rivers, waterfalls). Discuss the colours they see in water — it's not just blue! Demonstrate wet-on-wet technique (wetting the paper first, then adding colour) to create flowing water effects. Show how wet-on-dry creates sharper details for rocks and trees. Children create their own river landscape, experimenting with both techniques and colour mixing.
Educator tip
Taping edges of the paper to the table with masking tape prevents warping and creates a clean border when removed.
Assessment
Evaluate experimentation with painting techniques, colour mixing choices, and compositional awareness in the finished artwork.
