Code a River Path
Computational thinking skills — sequencing, debugging, and logical reasoning — are essential 21st-century skills introduced naturally through play.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Technology
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Create a simple sequence of directional instructions to navigate a river path
- Debug and refine instructions when the path doesn't work
- Understand that coding is giving precise instructions in the correct order
Materials
- Floor grid or large paper grid
- Directional arrow cards (forward, left, right)
- River path map drawn on the grid
- Small toy boat or figure
- Bee-Bot or coding robot (optional)
- Coding worksheets
Instructions
Draw a winding river path on a floor grid. Place a toy boat at the start and challenge children to 'code' its journey to the sea by giving precise directional instructions. Start with unplugged coding — children lay arrow cards to create a path, then test by moving the boat. Introduce the concept of debugging: if the boat doesn't reach the sea, find and fix the error. If available, programme a Bee-Bot to follow the river path.
Educator tip
Start every coding session with unplugged activities before moving to screen-based tools. Physical coding builds deeper understanding.
Assessment
Evaluate ability to create sequential instructions, identify and fix errors (debugging), and use increasingly complex coding concepts.
