Rainbow Colour Patterns
Pattern recognition is a foundational algebraic thinking skill. Using rainbow colours provides a natural, memorable context for pattern work.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Identify and extend repeating colour patterns using rainbow colours
- Create original ABAB, AABB, and ABC patterns
- Describe patterns using positional and colour vocabulary
Materials
- Rainbow-coloured beads or cubes
- Pattern strips (laminated templates)
- Coloured pencils or crayons
- Paint in rainbow colours
- String for threading beads
Instructions
Introduce the colours of the rainbow in order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). Demonstrate a simple AB pattern using two rainbow colours and invite children to identify the repeating unit. Progress to more complex patterns, encouraging children to predict what comes next. Provide materials for children to create their own rainbow patterns using beads, paint, or drawings. Share creations and discuss the rules that govern each pattern.
Educator tip
Display a large rainbow in the classroom as a reference point. Singing a rainbow colour song helps children remember the sequence.
Assessment
Evaluate children's ability to identify, extend, and create patterns of increasing complexity. Note their use of mathematical vocabulary when describing patterns.
