- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Creative Arts
- Level: Levels 1-3

- Discuss the art of Andy Goldsworthy and land art
- Photograph and document their temporary sculptures
Materials
- Flat, smooth rocks of various sizes
- Images of cairns and Andy Goldsworthy's work
- Camera or tablet for photographing
- Outdoor space or sand tray
- Drawing paper for sketching plans
Instructions
Show images of cairns (stacked rock structures) found around the world and Andy Goldsworthy's nature sculptures. Discuss how artists use natural materials to create art. Challenge children to balance and stack rocks to create their own sculptures, experimenting with size, weight, and placement. Photograph each creation, as rock sculptures are temporary art. Discuss the concepts of balance, symmetry, and gravity.
Educator tip
This works beautifully as an outdoor activity. If weather permits, create sculptures in a garden or natural area.
Assessment
Observe problem-solving during construction, understanding of balance and weight, and ability to discuss artistic choices.
