River Obstacle Course
Themed obstacle courses develop physical literacy while reinforcing thematic vocabulary and cooperative skills.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Physical Education
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Navigate an obstacle course representing a river's journey
- Develop balance, coordination, and spatial awareness
- Work cooperatively in teams to complete challenges
Materials
- Balance beams or benches (stepping stones)
- Tunnels or hoops (river caves)
- Blue mats or fabric (river sections)
- Cones for weaving (meandering river)
- Soft balls (river boulders to carry)
- Whistle and timer
Instructions
Set up an obstacle course representing a river's journey: balance across 'stepping stones' (beams), crawl through 'river caves' (tunnels), weave around 'boulders' (cones), jump over 'rapids' (low hurdles), and swim through the 'river' (rolling on mats). Introduce each station with river vocabulary. Children complete the course individually, then work in teams for relay races. Cool down with gentle 'flowing water' stretches.
Educator tip
Adding river sound effects during the course enhances the imaginative experience and motivates participation.
Assessment
Observe gross motor skills, balance, coordination, and cooperative behaviour during team challenges.
