River of Kindness
Using the river metaphor for kindness helps children understand how individual actions contribute to a positive community.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Social & Emotional
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Identify acts of kindness and their impact on others
- Contribute to a collaborative class display about kindness
- Practise giving and receiving compliments
Materials
- Large blue paper river display on wall
- Fish-shaped paper cutouts
- Markers and crayons
- Glitter and decorative materials
- Kindness prompt cards
Instructions
Create a large blue paper river on a classroom wall. Explain that every act of kindness is like a drop of water — together they create a mighty river. When children witness or perform an act of kindness, they write or draw it on a fish and add it to the river. Hold daily 'kindness circle' discussions where children share what they noticed. Watch the river fill up over the course of the unit.
Educator tip
Photograph the growing river display each week to show children the cumulative impact of their kindness.
Assessment
Track participation in kindness activities, quality of reflections, and observed pro-social behaviour changes throughout the unit.
