Rainbow Music & Movement
Music and movement activities develop listening skills, creative expression, and physical coordination while deepening thematic understanding.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Creative Arts
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Move expressively to music representing different types of water movement
- Create simple rhythmic patterns using body percussion or instruments
- Associate colours with musical moods and movement qualities
Materials
- Coloured scarves or ribbons (rainbow colours)
- Percussion instruments (rain sticks, shakers, drums, triangles)
- Music selections: calm river music, waterfall sounds, rain sounds
- Open space for movement
- Colour cards
Instructions
Begin by listening to different water sounds (babbling brook, waterfall, rain). Invite children to move their bodies like water: gently flowing, rushing fast, dripping slowly. Distribute coloured scarves and assign movement qualities to each colour (red = fast and fierce like a waterfall, blue = smooth and flowing like a river, green = gentle like rain). Play music and hold up colour cards to signal changes in movement. Conclude by creating a 'rainbow rhythm' — each colour group plays a different rhythm on percussion instruments, then combine them into a rainbow orchestra.
Assessment
Observe expressive quality of movement, ability to respond to musical changes, and rhythmic accuracy during percussion activities.
