Counting River Pebbles
Sorting and classifying natural objects builds foundational mathematical thinking while connecting numeracy to the natural world.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Sort and count pebbles by size, colour, and texture
- Compare quantities using language such as more, fewer, and equal
- Record counts using tally marks or simple number sentences
Materials
- Collection of smooth river pebbles (various sizes and colours)
- Sorting trays or egg cartons
- Number cards 1-20
- Magnifying glasses
- Paper and crayons for recording
Instructions
Begin by inviting children to explore a collection of river pebbles, encouraging them to notice differences in colour, size, shape, and texture. Model sorting strategies by grouping pebbles into categories and counting each group aloud. Provide sorting trays and invite children to create their own categories, then count and compare the quantities in each group. Encourage mathematical language throughout: 'Which group has the most? How many more do we need to make them equal?' Conclude by having children record their findings using drawings, tally marks, or number sentences.
Educator tip
Collect pebbles from a local river or purchase polished stones. Washing and drying them beforehand makes for a lovely sensory experience.
Assessment
Observe children's ability to sort by consistent criteria, count accurately, and use comparative mathematical language. Note whether children can record their findings independently.
