Wire Sculpture and Pipe Cleaners
To develop finger strength and 3D spatial thinking through wire bending and sculpting.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Physical Development
- Learning area: Physical Development
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Bends wire with control
- Creates recognisable forms
- Twists wires together
- Shows finger strength for bending
Materials
- Pipe cleaners in various colours
- Soft craft wire
- Beads to thread onto wire
- Wire cutters (adult use only)
Instructions
TEACHING BENDING: 'Bend the pipe cleaner here — make a right angle! Now curl the end into a spiral!' Show different bending techniques.
MODELLING FIGURES: 'Twist two pipe cleaners together for a body. Bend legs, bend arms. Add a bead for a head!' Simple figures are achievable.
ENCOURAGING CREATIVITY: 'What can you make? A flower? A spider? Glasses? A crown?' Pipe cleaners can become almost anything.
DEVELOPING FINGER STRENGTH: Bending and twisting wire requires significant finger strength. Regular practice builds the muscles used for writing.
