ASSESSING TREES: Choose trees with low branches, rough bark for grip, and no dead limbs. The tree should be climbed before allowing children.
SETTING RULES: 'Three points of contact always. Only climb as high as you feel safe. Call if you need help getting down.'
TEACHING TECHNIQUE: 'Test the branch before you stand on it. Does it bend? If it bends, it might not hold you. Choose a thick branch.'
MANAGING DESCENT: 'Coming down is harder. Turn around, face the tree, feet first, feel for the branch below.' Many children need help descending.
