- Shows advanced bilateral coordination
Materials
- Child-safe compasses (safety point)
- Pencils
- Paper
- Circle templates as support
Instructions
TEACHING COMPASS USE: 'Hold the top with one hand. Keep the point still. Twist the pencil end around slowly.' This requires exceptional bilateral coordination.
STARTING WITH TEMPLATES: Circle templates let children draw circles without a compass. 'Draw inside the circle template first.'
PROGRESSING TO COMPASS: Demonstrate slowly. Hold the compass steady. 'Keep the point still — only the pencil moves!' Many children find this very challenging.
CREATING COMPASS ART: 'Draw circles of different sizes. Overlap them. Colour the spaces!' Compass art makes practice purposeful and beautiful.
