Pet Shapes Exploration
Hands-on exploration of geometric shapes builds spatial reasoning and vocabulary that transfers across mathematical concepts.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Pets
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: EYFS Birth-2, 3-4, Reception
Objectives
- Recognise and name at least two basic shapes
- Use assorted puzzles of increasing complexity to develop geometric and spatial sense
- Match blocks to printed shape pictures
Materials
- Assorted wooden blocks
- Shape puzzles
- Large basic shapes printed on paper
- Pet-themed shape cards
Instructions
Begin by gathering students in a circle and introducing basic geometric shapes using pattern blocks, naming each shape clearly while tracing its outline with your finger. Distribute buckets of wooden blocks and guide sheets featuring large printed shapes to each child, inviting them to explore the blocks and discover which ones match the shapes on their sheets. Circulate among children, asking open-ended questions about what they notice as they compare and match. Encourage students to share their discoveries aloud with one another, celebrating the variety of ways they describe their shapes. Conclude by taking a shape walk around the classroom, pointing out where circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles appear in everyday objects. Provide time for free exploration with shape puzzles of varying complexity.
Educator tip
Create a 'shape hunt' checklist for children to mark off shapes they discover around the room.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe children's ability to follow simple directions, name shapes accurately, and apply their understanding when identifying shapes in the environment.
