Pet Patterns

Pattern recognition is foundational to algebraic thinking and helps children make predictions and identify relationships.

Instructions

Gather students in a circle and capture their attention with simple clapping or stomping patterns, inviting them to echo what they hear. Begin with two-element patterns (clap-stomp, clap-stomp) and gradually increase complexity as children demonstrate mastery. Transition to visual patterns using pet pictures attached to a felt board or magnetic surface, arranging dog-cat-dog-cat sequences for children to observe and continue. Invite individual students to approach the board and extend the pattern, thinking aloud about their reasoning. Encourage children to notice patterns in everyday classroom routines and the natural world, connecting this mathematical thinking to their lived experiences.

Educator tip

Record children's pattern creations with photos to create a class pattern book.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe students' ability to listen attentively, reproduce sound patterns accurately, and extend visual patterns correctly.
