Instructions
Begin by sharing a teacher-created example of an imaginative 'perfect pet' that does not look like any ordinary animal, giving children permission to dream beyond reality. Establish each child at their own easel with glue and an assortment of pre-cut geometric shapes in various colours. Encourage children to experiment with arranging shapes on their paper before committing to gluing, considering how circles might become heads and triangles might become ears or tails. Once satisfied with their arrangement, children glue their shapes and add painted details to bring their perfect pet to life. Throughout the process, circulate and engage children in conversation about their creative choices, asking questions like 'Tell me about your pet' and 'What special things can your pet do?' Display finished creations at child height for appreciation and discussion.
Educator tip
Display the teacher example throughout the activity and reference it when children need encouragement to try unusual combinations.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe students' ability to follow multi-step directions, use fine motor skills effectively, and express themselves through their artwork.
