Materials
- Small socks (baby socks preferred)
- Felt pieces cut into shapes
- Yarn
- Wiggle eyes
- Glue and hot glue gun (adult use only)
- Cotton balls for stuffing
Instructions
Invite each child to bring a small sock from home, building anticipation for this special project. Demonstrate how a simple sock transforms into a lovable pocket pet, showing children the materials available for customization. Lay out felt pieces, yarn lengths, and wiggle eyes for children to explore and select. Guide children in gluing googly eyes as the first step, then encourage free choice in adding yarn for hair, felt for noses and ears, and any other decorative elements they imagine. Circulate among children, offering encouragement and helping with placement decisions. Use the hot glue gun (adults only) to secure elements that need extra strength. Children may choose to stuff their pets with cotton balls, with the teacher assisting in tying a secure knot to close. Celebrate each unique creation and provide time for children to introduce their pocket pets to classmates.
Educator tip
Send home a note in advance requesting sock donations to ensure every child has materials.
