Instructions
Begin by showing children a completed pet house made from popsicle sticks, sparking excitement about creating their own. Demonstrate the technique of applying glue to popsicle sticks and arranging them to form walls and a roof, acknowledging that houses can take many shapes and designs. Depending on the children's developmental levels, provide either blank cardstock for freeform construction or outlined pet house templates for guided building. Support children as they glue sticks, encouraging patience as the glue sets. Once the structure is complete, invite children to colour and decorate their houses with markers and paint, expressing their creative vision. Finally, each child selects a pet picture to cut out and position inside or beside their pet house, creating a complete scene.
Educator tip
Pre-sort popsicle sticks into small containers for easy distribution and allow extra drying time before decoration.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe students' ability to follow multi-step directions, use fine motor skills for gluing and cutting, and express creativity through decoration.
