Instructions

Send home a note in advance requesting a photo of each child's pet, or prepare dog and cat cutouts for those without pets. Begin by reading the alphabet book 'W is for Woof: A Dog Alphabet' by Ruth Strother, emphasizing beginning sounds and inviting children to chime in on familiar letters. Following the reading, use the wall alphabet display to explore pet-themed words that begin with various sounds (dog, cat, fish, bird, water, bone, leash). Distribute cardstock and guide children in gluing their pet photo (or chosen picture) in the centre of their paper. Provide pet store catalogs and demonstrate how to find and cut out items that relate to pets, which children glue around their central image to create a collage. Encourage children to identify beginning sounds of items they include.

Educator tip

Pre-cut items from catalogs for younger children or those who need fine motor support.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe students' alphabet knowledge, recognition of beginning sounds, and ability to follow multi-step directions.
