- Respond to simple questions about reading material
- Work independently to create a pet store sign
Materials
- Book: 'How Much is That Doggie?' by Iza Trapani
- White cardstock
- Colouring pencils and markers
Instructions
Gather children in the reading area and share the story 'How Much is That Doggie?' by Iza Trapani with expression and enthusiasm, pausing at key moments to invite predictions and reactions. Following the reading, engage children in discussion with questions about the story's events, characters, and their favourite parts, developing reading comprehension and retention of pertinent information. Transition to the creative portion by announcing that the class will be opening their own pet store and each child gets to design a sign. Distribute cardstock and drawing materials, encouraging children to use different colours and to attempt their own spelling of 'Pet Store' or their store's unique name. Circulate among children, offering encouragement and guidance as needed while respecting individual creative choices. Display finished signs as a gallery or use them to set up a dramatic play pet store area.
Educator tip
Extend the activity by setting up a pet store dramatic play centre using the children's signs.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe students' ability to listen attentively, respond to questions with relevance, and focus on creating their sign.
