Materials
- Book: 'The Great Gracie Chase!' by Cynthia Rylant
- Pre-made puppy masks for decorating
- Colouring materials, pompoms, bows, glitter
Instructions
Begin by reading 'The Great Gracie Chase!' by Cynthia Rylant with enthusiasm, using different voices for characters and inviting children to predict what will happen. Following the story, engage children in comprehension discussion, asking about the sequence of events, character motivations, and their personal connections to the story. Distribute pre-printed puppy masks and an array of decorating materials, encouraging children to personalize their puppets with colours, pompoms, bows, and glitter that reflect their imagination. Circulate among children, asking about their design choices and offering assistance as needed. When puppets are complete, invite children to use their creations for role-play, re-enacting scenes from the story or creating new adventures for their puppy characters. Celebrate dramatic play as a form of story comprehension.
Educator tip
Set up a simple 'stage' area where children can perform their puppet shows for interested classmates.
