- Role-play with friends showing respect and good care habits
- Follow simple step directions for mask making
Materials
- Book: 'Unlovable' by Dan Yaccarino
- White paper plates
- Popsicle sticks
- Glue
- Pre-printed pet images (dog, cat, hamster, parrot, rabbit)
Instructions
Begin by reading 'Unlovable' by Dan Yaccarino, a touching story about a dog who feels overlooked until he finds his special person. Following the reading, facilitate discussion about proper pet care, asking questions about what pets need (food, water, exercise, love, veterinary care) and how children contribute to caring for pets at home. Encourage personal storytelling as children share their experiences with family pets. Distribute pre-printed pet images for children to colour and cut out, then guide them in gluing their pets onto paper plates. Attach popsicle stick handles to create masks for dramatic play. Once masks are complete, set up scenarios where children practise showing care and affection to each other's 'pets,' modelling gentle touch, kind words, and responsible behaviour.
Educator tip
Invite a local veterinarian or pet store employee for a classroom visit to reinforce responsible pet ownership.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe students' ability to listen, connect story themes to personal experience, and demonstrate caring behaviours during role-play.
