Kinds of Animals
Animal classification introduces systematic thinking and the scientific method of grouping by shared characteristics.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Pets
- Learning area: Understanding the World
- Level: EYFS Birth-2, 3-4, Reception
Objectives
- Develop awareness of different animal categories
- Listen attentively to informational text
- Play classification games
Materials
- Book: 'My Big Animal Book' by Roger Priddy
- Pre-cut laminated animal pictures
- Category word cards: insects, birds, fish, reptiles, mammals
Instructions
Begin by reading 'My Big Animal Book' by Roger Priddy, focusing attention on the variety of animal types represented. Following the reading, introduce classification vocabulary by posting category signs on the board: insects and spiders, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians, and mammals. Add a corresponding animal picture as a clue next to each word card. Review the distinguishing characteristics of each category (insects have six legs; birds have feathers and wings; fish have fins and breathe underwater; reptiles often have scales; mammals have fur and drink milk as babies). Invite children to select an animal picture from a collection and determine which category it belongs to, guiding them to place their animal in the correct group. Facilitate discussion as children explain their reasoning and discover new animals in each category.
Educator tip
Post the classification categories permanently in the science area and add new animals throughout the year.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe students' ability to listen attentively and demonstrate developing classification skills.
