Level 2 strengthens application and explanation. 'Water Table Clean Toys' deepens understanding of health responsibility.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large water table or two deep plastic tubs

- Mild tear-free liquid soap

- Assorted plastic toys such as animals, blocks, and vehicles

- Small scrub brushes and soft sponges

- Clean microfiber towels for drying

- Two plastic buckets for rinsing

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate an understanding of why we wash items to remove germs and dirt.

- Refine fine motor skills by using brushes to scrub small crevices.

- Practise cooperative play by sharing cleaning tools and workspace.

- Follow a multi-step sequence to complete a hygiene task.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Fill the water table with warm, soapy water and place the second tub filled with clean rinse water nearby.

2. Gather the children in a circle to discuss why we wash our hands and toys to stay healthy.

3. Demonstrate how to dip a toy into the soapy water and use a brush to scrub away imaginary dirt.

4. Model the rinsing process by dipping the scrubbed toy into the clean water bucket.

5. Place the rinsed toys on a towel to air dry or have children pat them dry.

6. Assign small groups of three to four children to the water table to ensure everyone has space to work.

7. Encourage children to talk about the process as they work, asking them to identify which toys are the dirtiest.

8. Monitor the play to ensure water stays inside the table and that children are using the tools safely.

9. Guide children to wring out sponges and hang up towels once the toys are clean.

10. Conclude by having the children wash their own hands to reinforce the hygiene lesson.

Educator Tip

If children lose interest, introduce a few waterproof dolls or plastic dishes to expand the narrative of the play. To differentiate for children who need more challenge, ask them to categorize the toys by material or size before they begin the cleaning process.

Assessment

- Observe if the child follows the sequence of soap, scrub, rinse, and dry.

- Note the child's ability to explain the connection between cleaning toys and preventing the spread of germs.

- Record the child's level of engagement and cooperation when sharing cleaning tools with peers.

Educator tip

Require complete thoughts (sentence frames); rotate roles in pairs; photograph work for portfolios.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe reasoning, independence, collaboration.
