Gross Motor Skill Circuit
Toddlers internalize routines through repetition and movement. 'Gross Motor Skill Circuit' supports emerging independence and safety awareness.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Health, Safety and Hygiene
- Learning area: Gross Motor
- Level: EYFS 2-3
Objectives
- Identify body parts
- Imitate hygiene routines
- Follow 1-step safety directions
Instructions
Materials
- Four soft foam floor mats or carpet squares
- Two low tunnels made of fabric or pop-up mesh
- Six large, lightweight beanbags
- One basket for collecting items
- Masking tape for floor markings
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate basic balance by walking across floor mats.
- Practise crawling through a tunnel to build spatial awareness.
- Improve hand-eye coordination by picking up and placing beanbags into a basket.
- Follow simple verbal directions during a physical sequence.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Clear a safe, open space in the classroom and lay down the foam mats in a straight line.
2. Place the tunnels at the end of the mat path to create a multi-stage obstacle course.
3. Scatter the beanbags on the floor near the start of the course.
4. Gather the children and demonstrate the movement by walking slowly across the mats and crawling through the tunnel.
5. Encourage each child to pick up one beanbag before they begin the path.
6. Guide the child to walk across the mats, offering a steady hand for support if they seem unsteady.
7. Assist the child as they crawl through the tunnel, using verbal encouragement from the other side.
8. Direct the child to place their beanbag into the basket once they exit the tunnel.
9. Allow children to repeat the circuit as their interest and energy levels permit.
10. Conclude the activity by having the children help gather the beanbags to practise tidying up.
Educator Tip
Toddlers often have varying levels of confidence with physical movement. If a child is hesitant, simplify the circuit by removing the tunnel and focusing only on the mats. You can also model the movements alongside them to build their sense of security and engagement.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can maintain balance while walking across the mats with minimal assistance.
- Note the child's ability to navigate the tunnel independently or with verbal prompts.
- Record whether the child successfully completes the sequence of picking up and depositing the beanbag.
Educator tip
Use choice questions; keep groups small; accept approximations; keep transitions fast.
Assessment
Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Observe imitation, participation, simple labelling.
