Gross Motor Skill Circuit
Level 1 requires guided modelling. 'Gross Motor Skill Circuit' reinforces healthy habits and safety awareness in structured format.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Health, Safety and Hygiene
- Learning area: Gross Motor
- Level: EYFS 3-4
Objectives
- Follow 2–3 step directions
- Identify key safety or hygiene concepts
- Participate in discussion
Instructions
Materials
- Masking tape for floor markings
- Four soft foam floor mats
- Two hula hoops
- One small beanbag per child
- A set of colorful cones
- A portable music player
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate improved balance by walking along a straight tape line.
- Coordinate movements to step inside and outside of hula hoops.
- Practise spatial awareness by navigating around stationary cones.
- Follow multi-step verbal directions during a physical activity.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Clear a large space in the classroom and set up the circuit stations in a circular path.
2. Place a long strip of masking tape on the floor for the balance beam portion of the circuit.
3. Lay two hula hoops flat on the floor, spaced one foot apart, for the jumping station.
4. Arrange three cones in a zig-zag pattern to encourage weaving movements.
5. Gather the children and demonstrate each movement slowly, emphasizing how to keep the body steady.
6. Ask the children to place a beanbag on their heads while walking the tape line to encourage posture and balance.
7. Instruct the children to step into each hula hoop with both feet before moving to the cones.
8. Encourage the children to weave through the cones without touching them.
9. Play upbeat music to maintain energy and signal the flow of the circuit.
10. Allow each child to complete the circuit twice, providing physical support if a child struggles with stability.
Educator Tip
If a child struggles with balance, allow them to hold your hand or a wall for support during the tape walking portion. You can increase the challenge for more advanced students by asking them to perform the circuit while carrying the beanbag on their shoulder or back instead of their head.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can maintain balance while walking on the tape line without stepping off.
- Note the child ability to coordinate jumping into the hoops with both feet.
- Record whether the child successfully navigates the zig-zag path without knocking over the cones.
Educator tip
Pre-cut difficult pieces; use visual schedule; model health vocabulary.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: engagement, comprehension, correct task attempt.
