Gross Motor Skill Circuit
Level 2 strengthens application and explanation. 'Gross Motor Skill Circuit' deepens understanding of health responsibility.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Health, Safety and Hygiene
- Learning area: Gross Motor
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Explain safety/hygiene reasoning
- Apply concept independently
- Collaborate during activity
Instructions
Materials
- Masking tape for floor markings
- Four soft foam balance beams or floor mats
- Six hula hoops
- Bean bags
- Cones for start and finish lines
- Whistle or bell for signaling
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate improved balance while walking along a narrow path.
- Coordinate movements to jump into and out of hoops.
- Follow multi-step instructions during a physical circuit.
- Exhibit spatial awareness by navigating around obstacles without collisions.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Clear a large space in the classroom or outdoor area and set up the circuit stations in a logical sequence.
2. Use masking tape to create a straight line on the floor for the first station.
3. Place the foam balance beams end to end for the second station.
4. Arrange the hula hoops in a zig-zag pattern on the floor for the third station.
5. Gather the children at the starting line and demonstrate the entire circuit yourself.
6. Explain that they must walk heel-to-toe on the tape, balance on the beams, and jump into each hoop with two feet.
7. Instruct the children to wait for your signal before starting the circuit to ensure safety and spacing.
8. Allow children to complete the circuit one at a time or in small groups of three to maintain focus.
9. Encourage children to carry a bean bag on their head during the balance beam portion to increase the challenge.
10. Conclude the activity by having students perform three deep breaths to return to a calm state.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for children who struggle with balance, provide a hand for support or place the balance beam directly against a wall. If children finish quickly, ask them to complete the circuit again while moving backward or at a different speed to reinforce their motor control.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can maintain balance on the beam without stepping off.
- Note the child ability to land with both feet inside the hoops.
- Record whether the child follows the sequence of the circuit independently.
Educator tip
Require complete thoughts (sentence frames); rotate roles in pairs; photograph work for portfolios.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe reasoning, independence, collaboration.
