Water Table Clean Toys

Level 3 promotes critical thinking and personal responsibility. 'Water Table Clean Toys' strengthens reasoning about health and safety decisions.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large water table or two deep plastic basins

- Mild, tear-free liquid soap

- Soft scrub brushes and sponges

- Assorted plastic toy animals, vehicles, and blocks

- Clean, dry towels

- Drying rack or mesh basket

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate the ability to follow a multi-step cleaning process independently.

- Explain the connection between washing items and preventing the spread of germs.

- Refine fine motor control by using brushes to scrub textured surfaces.

- Practise cooperative play by sharing cleaning tools and workspace.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Fill the water table with warm water and a small amount of soap to create bubbles.

2. Gather the children in a circle to discuss why we wash toys, focusing on the concept of removing invisible germs.

3. Demonstrate the proper cleaning technique by scrubbing a toy thoroughly, paying attention to crevices and corners.

4. Invite children to select a few dirty toys from a designated bin to place into the soapy water.

5. Encourage children to use the brushes and sponges to scrub the toys, emphasizing the need to clean all sides.

6. Instruct children to rinse their toys in a secondary basin of clear water once the scrubbing is complete.

7. Have the children place their clean toys on the drying rack or a dry towel.

8. Facilitate a brief reflection where children describe the difference between the toys before and after the cleaning process.

9. Guide the children in wiping down the water table surface to maintain a clean environment.

Educator Tip

To extend this activity for advanced learners, introduce a sorting component where children categorize toys by material or size before washing. If a child struggles with the process, model the scrubbing motion hand-over-hand to build confidence and coordination.

Assessment

- Observe if the child completes the full cycle of scrubbing, rinsing, and drying.

- Listen for the child to articulate why hygiene is important during the reflection phase.

- Note the child's ability to maintain focus on the task for the duration of the activity.

Educator tip

Use simple rubric; insist on justification; allow multiple correct solutions; support with exemplars/word banks.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: reasoning, clarity, independence.
