Water Table Clean Toys

Level 1 requires guided modelling. 'Water Table Clean Toys' reinforces healthy habits and safety awareness in structured format.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large water table or two plastic basins filled with warm water.

- Mild, tear-free liquid soap.

- Assorted plastic toys such as animals, blocks, or dolls.

- Small scrub brushes, sponges, and soft cloths.

- Towels for drying stations.

- Aprons for the children.

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate an understanding of hygiene by washing objects that touch the floor or mouth.

- Refine fine motor skills through scrubbing, squeezing, and wiping motions.

- Follow a multi-step sequence to complete a task.

- Engage in cooperative play by sharing cleaning tools and space.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Set up the water table by filling it halfway with warm, soapy water.

2. Gather the children and explain that toys need to be cleaned to keep germs away and keep everyone healthy.

3. Demonstrate how to dip a toy into the water, use a brush to scrub the surface, and rinse it in a separate basin of clean water.

4. Invite children to put on their aprons and approach the water table in small groups of three or four.

5. Encourage children to select a dirty toy and apply a small amount of soap to their sponge.

6. Guide them to scrub all sides of the toy, focusing on corners and crevices.

7. Assist children in rinsing their toys thoroughly in the clean water basin.

8. Direct children to place their clean toys on a towel to air dry.

9. Prompt a brief discussion about why clean toys are safer for play.

10. Supervise the cleanup process, ensuring all water is wiped from the floor to prevent slips.

Educator Tip

To differentiate for children who need more support, provide larger toys with smooth surfaces that are easier to scrub. For children who need a challenge, introduce a sorting step where they categorize toys by material or size after they have been dried.

Assessment

- Observe if the child correctly identifies the sequence of scrubbing, rinsing, and drying.

- Note the child's ability to use tools like sponges and brushes with controlled pressure.

- Record whether the child can verbalize the connection between washing toys and maintaining personal health.

Educator tip

Pre-cut difficult pieces; use visual schedule; model health vocabulary.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: engagement, comprehension, correct task attempt.
