- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: Geography
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Analyse similarities/differences among countries
- Justify thinking
- Extend with writing, mapping, or data graph
Instructions
Materials
- Large printed map of the world and a specific map of India.
- Pre-cut paper strips in saffron, white, and green.
- Blue circular stickers or markers for the Ashoka Chakra.
- Glue sticks and cardstock paper.
- Globe for demonstration.
- Printed outlines of the Indian flag and the Indian subcontinent.
Learning Objectives
- Identify India as a country on a world map.
- Recognise the three colours of the Indian flag and their arrangement.
- Practise fine motor control by aligning and pasting paper strips.
- Describe one geographical feature or cultural element of India discussed during the lesson.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and place the globe in the centre to discuss the concept of different countries.
2. Point to India on the world map and invite children to observe its shape and location relative to their own country.
3. Show a picture of the Indian flag and identify the three horizontal bands of colour.
4. Explain that the blue wheel in the centre is called the Ashoka Chakra and represents movement and progress.
5. Distribute the cardstock templates and the pre-cut coloured paper strips to each student.
6. Instruct the children to glue the saffron strip at the top, the white strip in the middle, and the green strip at the bottom.
7. Assist the children in placing the blue sticker or drawing the wheel in the centre of the white band.
8. Ask each child to glue their completed flag next to the map outline of India on their worksheet.
9. Encourage students to share one thing they learned about India with a partner.
10. Display the completed maps on the classroom wall to create a collective world map.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for children who need more challenge, provide a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw the map of India freehand before adding the flag. If a student struggles with the fine motor task of gluing, provide pre-glued adhesive strips to reduce frustration and keep the focus on the geographical learning.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly identify India on the world map when prompted.
- Check that the child placed the flag colours in the correct horizontal order.
- Note the child's ability to explain the purpose of the Ashoka Chakra during the closing discussion.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: reasoning, accuracy, clarity, independence.
