Materials
- Three to four lengths of colorful, lightweight fabric or scarves.
- A printed copy of the book Mama's Saris by Mara Bergman.
- A full-length child-safe mirror.
- A selection of costume jewelry like bangles or plastic necklaces.
- A basket for organising the fabrics.
Learning Objectives
- Identify that different cultures wear different types of traditional clothing.
- Practise fine motor skills by draping and tucking fabric.
- Describe colours and textures using basic descriptive vocabulary.
- Participate in a group discussion about personal and cultural identity.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and introduce the book Mama's Saris.
2. Read the story aloud, pausing to point out the vibrant colours and patterns of the saris.
3. Show the children the fabric lengths and allow them to touch the different textures.
4. Explain that a sari is a long piece of cloth that is wrapped around the body.
5. Demonstrate how to drape a piece of fabric over your shoulder or around your waist.
6. Invite children to take turns standing in front of the mirror to drape the fabric on themselves.
7. Assist children in adding bangles or necklaces to complete their look.
8. Encourage the children to walk around the room to see how the fabric moves when they turn.
9. Ask open-ended questions such as how the fabric feels or what colour they chose.
10. Conclude the activity by having the children fold the fabrics and place them back into the basket.
Educator Tip
If children struggle with the length of the fabric, use shorter scarves to prevent tripping. You can extend this activity by setting up a permanent dramatic play station with these materials to encourage ongoing exploration of cultural dress-up.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can differentiate between the sari fabric and their own everyday clothing.
- Record the child's ability to follow multi-step instructions for draping the fabric.
- Note the child's engagement during the group reading and their willingness to participate in the dress-up portion.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
