Mama's Saris Cultural Study

Level 2 deepens inquiry and comparative thinking. 'Mama's Saris Cultural Study' promotes appreciation of diversity and global citizenship.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- A collection of three to four authentic saris in various colours and fabrics.

- Large, child-safe mirrors placed at floor level.

- Printed photographs of families wearing traditional clothing from India.

- A globe or world map.

- Sugar paper, fabric scraps, and glue sticks for art extension.

Learning Objectives

- Identify the sari as a traditional garment from India.

- Describe differences in fabric texture, such as silk, cotton, or chiffon.

- Demonstrate fine motor control by draping or folding fabric.

- Express curiosity about cultural traditions through verbal questioning.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and display the globe, pointing to India to provide geographical context.

2. Show the photographs of people wearing saris, encouraging children to notice the colours and patterns.

3. Present the actual saris, allowing children to touch the different fabrics and describe how they feel.

4. Demonstrate how a sari is a long, unstitched piece of fabric, contrasting this with the children's own clothes.

5. Invite children to stand in front of the mirrors and practise draping the fabric over their shoulders or around their waists with teacher assistance.

6. Facilitate a group discussion about why people wear specific clothes for celebrations or daily life.

7. Transition to the art area where children use fabric scraps and paper to create their own collage designs inspired by the patterns they observed.

8. Conclude by hanging the finished collages in the classroom to celebrate the diversity of the clothing studied.

Educator Tip

If children struggle with the length of the saris, cut smaller swatches of fabric so they can practise wrapping them around dolls or stuffed animals. This allows them to focus on the mechanics of the garment without the physical challenge of managing several yards of material.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can correctly name the garment as a sari during the discussion.

- Note the child's ability to describe at least two sensory characteristics of the fabric.

- Record whether the child participates in the draping activity with peers.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe explanation quality, cooperation, accuracy.
