Mama's Saris Cultural Study
Infants build neural foundations through sensory pairing and repetition. 'Mama's Saris Cultural Study' introduces global diversity in developmentally appropriate way.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: Internationalism
- Level: EYFS Birth-2
Objectives
- Attend to visual cultural images
- Respond to music
- Explore textures
- Begin global awareness through sensory exposure
Instructions
Materials
- Three pieces of fabric with varying textures like silk, cotton, and chiffon.
- A collection of colorful scarves or fabric scraps in bright patterns.
- A soft, baby-safe mirror placed at floor level.
- A basket with soft edges for holding materials.
- A recording of gentle, rhythmic world music.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate sensory exploration by touching, grasping, or mouthing different fabric textures.
- Track moving objects with eyes as the teacher waves fabric overhead.
- Respond to the teacher's voice and descriptive language during the interaction.
- Exhibit comfort and engagement during a shared sensory experience.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Create a calm, quiet space on the floor using a soft rug or mat.
2. Play soft, rhythmic music at a low volume to set a welcoming atmosphere.
3. Sit on the floor with the infants and place the basket of fabrics within their reach.
4. Pick up a piece of silk or chiffon and slowly wave it through the air above the infants to encourage visual tracking.
5. Describe the colours and textures aloud, using simple words like soft, smooth, bright, and shiny.
6. Gently drape a piece of fabric over your own shoulders to model how clothing is worn.
7. Allow each infant to touch, hold, or explore the fabric pieces at their own pace.
8. Encourage the infants to look at themselves in the floor mirror while holding a piece of fabric.
9. Observe individual reactions to the different textures and adjust the pace if an infant becomes overstimulated.
10. Conclude the activity by singing a simple song while folding the fabrics back into the basket.
Educator Tip
Infants process the world through their senses, so focus on the tactile experience rather than the cultural history. If an infant shows signs of overstimulation, such as turning away or fussing, remove the fabrics and return to a calm, quiet interaction.
Assessment
- Observe if the infant reaches for or grasps the fabric textures.
- Note if the infant follows the movement of the fabric with their eyes.
- Record the infant's vocalizations or facial expressions when interacting with the materials.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe gaze tracking, reaching, emotional regulation.
