Mama's Saris Cultural Study

Toddlers develop global awareness through movement, repetition, and play. 'Mama's Saris Cultural Study' supports language growth and curiosity.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Three pieces of lightweight, colorful fabric such as silk or cotton.

- One child-safe mirror mounted at floor level.

- A selection of soft, plastic bangles or bracelets.

- A basket for organising the fabric pieces.

- A printed photograph of a person wearing a sari.

Learning Objectives

- Explore different fabric textures through tactile engagement.

- Observe and react to a visual representation of cultural clothing.

- Practise fine motor skills by placing bangles on wrists or into a container.

- Engage in social interaction by mirroring the teacher's movements.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a comfortable, carpeted area with the basket of fabrics placed in the centre.

2. Show the photograph of a person wearing a sari and point to the bright colours, using simple words like red, blue, or shiny.

3. Pull one piece of fabric from the basket and drape it gently over your shoulders to model how a sari is worn.

4. Encourage the children to touch the fabric, describing the texture as soft, smooth, or light.

5. Allow the children to drape the fabric over their own shoulders or heads to explore the sensation of the material.

6. Bring the children to the floor mirror so they can see themselves wearing the fabric.

7. Introduce the bangles by shaking them to make a soft sound, then help the children place them on their wrists.

8. Encourage the children to look in the mirror again to see the bangles and fabric together.

9. Conclude the activity by singing a simple song while the children move the fabric to the rhythm.

10. Gently guide the children to help place the materials back into the basket to practise early cleanup routines.

Educator Tip

Toddlers often explore through mouthing objects, so ensure all fabrics are clean and free of loose beads or small attachments. If a child becomes overstimulated by the fabric, simplify the activity by focusing only on the sensory experience of the bangles.

Assessment

- Observe if the child reaches out to touch or grasp the fabric during the exploration phase.

- Note if the child makes eye contact with the mirror or the photograph when prompted.

- Record whether the child attempts to mimic the action of placing a bangle on their wrist.

Assessment

Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Participation, imitation, early vocabulary attempts.
