- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: SEL / Science
- Level: EYFS 2-3

Instructions
Materials
- Ripe mangoes and bananas
- Plain yogurt
- A battery-operated hand blender or a manual whisk
- Small, unbreakable plastic cups
- A large, clear mixing bowl
- Napkins and a damp cloth for cleanup
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate interest in new textures and food smells.
- Practise turn-taking while waiting for a turn to stir or press the blender.
- Develop fine motor skills by holding a cup or spoon.
- Identify the colour yellow through visual exploration of the fruit.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and place the fruit in the centre so they can touch and smell the mangoes and bananas.
2. Name the fruit clearly and encourage the children to repeat the names.
3. Demonstrate how to peel the fruit, allowing children to observe the change in texture from the skin to the soft interior.
4. Invite each child to place a piece of fruit into the bowl, assisting them as needed to ensure safety.
5. Add the yogurt to the bowl and explain that you are mixing the ingredients together.
6. Allow each child to take a brief turn holding the whisk or pressing the button on the blender while you provide hand-over-hand support.
7. Narrate the process using simple words like mix, stir, and yellow.
8. Pour the finished smoothie into small cups for each child.
9. Encourage the children to taste the smoothie and describe the flavor using simple prompts like sweet or cold.
10. Model cleanup by wiping the table together with a damp cloth.
Educator Tip
Toddlers often have varying levels of sensory sensitivity. If a child is hesitant to touch the fruit or taste the smoothie, allow them to observe from a comfortable distance without pressure. You can extend the activity by showing pictures of India or playing soft, traditional music during the snack time.
Assessment
- Observe if the child participates in the sensory exploration of the fruit textures.
- Note the child's ability to wait for a turn during the mixing process.
- Record whether the child attempts to taste the smoothie or shows curiosity about the ingredients.
Assessment
Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Participation, imitation, early vocabulary attempts.
