Instructions
Materials
- One blender with a secure lid
- Fresh mango chunks and plain yogurt
- A small amount of ground cardamom
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Individual small plastic cups for serving
- A world map or globe showing India
Learning Objectives
- Identify India on a map as the origin of the smoothie ingredients.
- Practise turn-taking while adding ingredients to the blender.
- Describe sensory attributes of the ingredients such as smell, texture, and colour.
- Demonstrate cooperation by working together to create a shared snack.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather students in a circle and show them India on the map. Explain that mangoes are a popular fruit in India.
2. Wash hands thoroughly with all students to model proper hygiene before food preparation.
3. Place the blender in the centre of the table where all children can see the process safely.
4. Invite one child at a time to help scoop mango chunks into the blender using a measuring cup.
5. Allow each child to smell the cardamom spice and describe if it smells sweet or strong.
6. Assist the children in pouring the yogurt into the blender while counting the scoops together.
7. Secure the lid tightly and let the children take turns pressing the pulse button to blend the mixture.
8. Pour the finished smoothie into small cups and encourage the children to thank their classmates for their help.
9. Sit together to enjoy the snack and discuss the flavor of the mango and spice.
Educator Tip
If a child is hesitant to try the new flavor, encourage them to simply touch or smell the smoothie without pressure. You can differentiate this activity by asking more advanced students to predict what colour the smoothie will become before blending.
Assessment
- Observe if the child waits for their turn to add an ingredient to the blender.
- Listen for the child using descriptive words to explain the texture or taste of the smoothie.
- Note if the child can point to the general location of India on the classroom map.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
