Indian Smoothie Activity

Infants build neural foundations through sensory pairing and repetition. 'Indian Smoothie Activity' introduces global diversity in developmentally appropriate way.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Ripe mangoes, peeled and pitted

- Plain yogurt

- A small electric blender or hand immersion blender

- Soft plastic spoons

- Sensory trays or high chair trays

- Small bowls for each infant

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate sensory exploration through touch and taste.

- Observe cause and effect by watching the blender operate.

- Engage in social interaction through teacher-led verbal modelling.

- Develop fine motor skills by grasping a spoon or reaching for food.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the workspace by ensuring all infants are securely seated in high chairs or on a clean floor mat.

2. Introduce the mangoes by allowing the infants to touch the soft, cool texture of the fruit pieces.

3. Narrate the process clearly, using simple words like mix, cold, and sweet.

4. Place the mangoes and yogurt into the blender container while the infants watch.

5. Turn on the blender for a few seconds, keeping it at a safe distance, to allow the infants to hear the sound and see the movement.

6. Pour the smooth mixture into individual small bowls.

7. Offer a small amount of the smoothie to each infant using a soft spoon.

8. Observe each infant for signs of enjoyment or sensory curiosity.

9. Provide gentle encouragement as they explore the taste and temperature of the food.

10. Conclude the activity by cleaning hands and faces with warm cloths.

Educator Tip

Focus on the sensory experience rather than the consumption of the food. If an infant is hesitant to taste the smoothie, allow them to simply touch the texture or smell the fruit to build comfort. This activity is designed for brief engagement, so keep the transition from preparation to tasting fast to maintain interest.

Assessment

- Note if the infant tracks the movement of the blender or the teacher.

- Record the infant's physical reaction to the taste and texture of the smoothie.

- Observe the infant's ability to reach for the spoon or bowl during the interaction.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe gaze tracking, reaching, emotional regulation.
