China Mapping & Flag

Infants build neural foundations through sensory pairing and repetition. 'China Mapping & Flag' introduces global diversity in developmentally appropriate way.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large map of the world printed on soft fabric or vinyl.

- Small Chinese flag made of felt or silk.

- Red and yellow sensory scarves.

- High-contrast images of Chinese landmarks or cultural items.

- Soft floor mats for comfortable positioning.

Learning Objectives

- Track the movement of objects with eyes to develop visual focus.

- Reach toward and grasp sensory materials to build fine motor skills.

- Respond to the teacher's voice and descriptive language about the flag.

- Experience different textures associated with the cultural materials.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Place the large world map flat on the floor and position infants on their backs or tummies on the soft mats.

2. Point to the area representing China on the map while speaking in a calm, clear tone.

3. Gently wave the red and yellow sensory scarves above the infants to encourage tracking movements.

4. Introduce the Chinese flag by allowing the infants to touch the fabric, describing the colours as bright and soft.

5. Hold the flag at eye level, moving it slowly from left to right to encourage visual tracking.

6. Narrate the activity by saying simple phrases like, This is the flag of China, or Look at the bright red colour.

7. Allow infants to grasp the edges of the flag or scarves, providing support for their hands if needed.

8. Keep the session brief, lasting no more than five to ten minutes, to match the short attention spans of the infants.

Educator Tip

Infants learn through sensory exploration rather than abstract concepts. Focus on the tactile experience of the fabrics and the visual contrast of the colours. If an infant loses interest, transition to a simple song or rhythmic movement to keep the engagement positive and low-pressure.

Assessment

- Observe if the infant follows the movement of the flag with their eyes.

- Note if the infant reaches out to touch or grasp the materials provided.

- Record any vocalizations or changes in facial expression when the teacher introduces the new objects.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe gaze tracking, reaching, emotional regulation.
