Level 1 builds foundational geography and cultural awareness. 'China Mapping & Flag' reinforces identity and belonging.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large printed map of the world or a globe.

- Pre-cut red sugar paper rectangles.

- Small yellow paper stars and circles.

- Non-toxic glue sticks.

- A physical flag of China for visual reference.

- Tray for organising craft supplies.

Learning Objectives

- Identify the flag of China by its distinct red colour and yellow shapes.

- Practise fine motor control by placing small paper shapes onto a larger surface.

- Develop spatial awareness by observing the location of China on a world map.

- Follow multi-step directions to complete a simple craft project.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and display the world map. Point to China and explain that it is a very large country far away.

2. Show the children the physical flag of China. Ask them to describe the colours and shapes they see.

3. Explain that the red colour represents happiness and the yellow stars represent the people.

4. Distribute the red rectangles to each child at their workspace.

5. Provide each child with a small bowl containing the yellow stars and circles.

6. Demonstrate how to apply a small amount of glue to the back of a yellow shape and press it onto the red paper.

7. Encourage the children to arrange their yellow shapes on the red background to create their own version of the flag.

8. Circulate around the room to assist children with glue application and to discuss the colours.

9. Allow the flags to dry on a flat surface before displaying them in the classroom.

Educator Tip

To support children who struggle with fine motor tasks, pre-apply small glue dots to the red paper so they only need to press the shapes down. If a child finishes early, encourage them to find the colour red elsewhere in the classroom to reinforce colour recognition.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can correctly identify the red colour of the flag.

- Note the child's ability to manipulate small paper shapes using a pincer grasp.

- Record whether the child can follow the sequence of applying glue and placing the shape.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
