China Mapping & Flag

Toddlers develop global awareness through movement, repetition, and play. 'China Mapping & Flag' supports language growth and curiosity.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large printed map of China with simplified borders

- Five small red sugar paper rectangles

- Pre-cut yellow paper stars with adhesive backing

- Non-toxic glue sticks

- A small globe or world map poster

- Red fabric scraps for sensory exploration

Learning Objectives

- Recognise the colour red as a primary visual identifier for China.

- Develop fine motor skills by practicing the pincer grasp to place stickers.

- Engage in sensory exploration by touching different textures.

- Build spatial awareness by identifying the location of China on a map.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and place the globe in the centre to show the concept of a big world.

2. Point to China on the map and say the name clearly while tracing the border with your finger.

3. Allow the children to touch the red fabric scraps to associate the colour with the country.

4. Distribute the pre-cut red rectangles to each child to serve as the base of their flag.

5. Demonstrate how to peel the backing off a yellow star and press it onto the red paper.

6. Assist children with the pincer grasp if they struggle to place the star independently.

7. Encourage children to glue their completed flag onto the large map near the area labelled China.

8. Use simple language to repeat the word China as they place their flags.

9. Celebrate the completion of the flags with a short song or rhythmic clapping.

10. Display the map at the eye level of the toddlers so they can revisit their work throughout the day.

Educator Tip

Toddlers have short attention spans, so keep the demonstration under two minutes. If a child becomes restless, allow them to simply touch the red materials or place a star on a blank sheet of paper rather than forcing the completion of the map.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can identify the colour red when prompted.

- Note the child's ability to use a pincer grasp to manipulate the star sticker.

- Record whether the child responds to the name China when you point to the map.

Assessment

Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Participation, imitation, early vocabulary attempts.
