Chinese Counting & Matching

Toddlers develop global awareness through movement, repetition, and play. 'Chinese Counting & Matching' supports language growth and curiosity.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Laminated cards featuring the Chinese characters for numbers 1 through 5.

- Corresponding sets of small plastic animals or counting cubes.

- Shallow wicker baskets for sorting.

- A printed visual chart showing numbers 1 to 5 with matching quantities.

- Soft floor mats for a comfortable seating area.

Learning Objectives

- Recognise the sound of numbers 1 to 5 in Mandarin.

- Practise one-to-one correspondence by placing one object per card.

- Develop fine motor skills through grasping and placing small items.

- Engage in turn-taking during a small group activity.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Arrange the children in a semi-circle on the floor mats to ensure everyone can see the materials.

2. Place the number cards in a row on the floor, starting with the character for one.

3. Pronounce the number clearly in Mandarin and ask the children to repeat the sound after you.

4. Model the action by picking up a single plastic animal and placing it on the card for one.

5. Encourage a child to pick up a second animal and place it on the card for two as you say the number together.

6. Continue this process for numbers three through five, keeping the pace brisk to match the short attention span of toddlers.

7. Allow the children to explore the materials freely, moving the animals between the baskets and the cards.

8. Circulate among the children to provide gentle guidance, repeating the Mandarin number names as they interact with the objects.

9. Conclude the activity by singing a simple counting song that incorporates the Mandarin numbers learned.

Educator Tip

If a child loses interest in the numbers, focus on the sensory aspect of the animals or the texture of the cards. You can differentiate by providing fewer cards for children who are easily overwhelmed, or by adding more complex counting sets for those who demonstrate higher engagement.

Assessment

- Observe if the child attempts to repeat the Mandarin number sounds.

- Note the child's ability to place items onto the cards with teacher support.

- Record whether the child shows interest in matching quantities to the provided numerals.

Assessment

Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Participation, imitation, early vocabulary attempts.
