Instructions

Materials

- Large printed map of the world and a specific map of China

- Pre-cut paper shapes of the Chinese flag (red rectangles)

- Small yellow paper stars and glue sticks

- Globe for visual reference

- Crayons or markers

- Laminated fact cards featuring images of the Great Wall and a panda

Learning Objectives

- Identify China as a country on a world map.

- Recognise the red and yellow colour scheme of the Chinese flag.

- Develop fine motor skills by placing small star cutouts onto a flag template.

- Verbalize one unique fact about China during group discussion.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and display the globe. Point to the location of China and explain that it is a very large country.

2. Show the printed map of China and compare its shape to the globe. Ask the children if they can spot any familiar landmarks on the fact cards.

3. Discuss the Chinese flag. Point out the red background and the five yellow stars. Explain that the stars represent the unity of the people.

4. Distribute the red paper rectangles and the yellow star cutouts to each child at their tables.

5. Model how to apply a small amount of glue to the back of each star.

6. Instruct the children to place one large star in the upper left corner and four smaller stars in an arc to the right.

7. Assist children with the placement if they struggle with the spatial arrangement of the stars.

8. Allow the glue to dry while the children share one thing they learned about China with a partner.

9. Display the completed flags on a classroom wall under a sign labelled China.

Educator Tip

To differentiate for children who need more support, provide a flag template with faint outlines where the stars should be placed. For children who are ready for a challenge, encourage them to draw a small panda or a dragon on the back of their flag to represent their favourite part of the lesson.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can correctly point to China on the world map when prompted.

- Note the child's ability to replicate the flag pattern using the provided star cutouts.

- Listen for the child to share at least one accurate detail about China during the closing discussion.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe explanation quality, cooperation, accuracy.
