China Mapping & Flag
Level 3 promotes critical thinking and structured analysis. 'China Mapping & Flag' strengthens global literacy and respectful cultural awareness.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: Geography
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Analyse similarities/differences among countries
- Justify thinking
- Extend with writing, mapping, or data graph
Instructions
Materials
- Large printed map of the world and a specific map of China.
- Pre-cut red sugar paper rectangles and small yellow paper stars.
- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors.
- Globe for spatial reference.
- Printed fact sheet with images of the Chinese flag and the Great Wall.
Learning Objectives
- Identify China on a world map or globe.
- Recognise the colours and symbols of the Chinese flag.
- Demonstrate fine motor control by cutting and pasting shapes to recreate the flag.
- Describe at least one geographic or cultural feature of China.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and display the globe. Ask them to find the continent of Asia and then point to China.
2. Show the printed map of China and discuss its shape, comparing it to a rooster or a recognizable object to help them visualize the borders.
3. Present the Chinese flag. Ask the children to count the stars and identify the colours red and yellow.
4. Explain that the large star represents the unity of the people and the smaller stars represent different groups.
5. Distribute the red paper rectangles and the yellow star cutouts to each student.
6. Instruct the children to glue the large star in the upper left corner and arrange the four smaller stars in an arc to the right.
7. Circulate the room to assist with the placement of the stars, ensuring they follow the pattern observed on the reference flag.
8. Ask each child to share one thing they learned about China while they finish their project.
9. Display the completed flags on a classroom wall under a sign labelled China.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for students who struggle with fine motor tasks, provide pre-glued star stickers instead of loose paper stars. You can extend this activity for advanced learners by asking them to draw a famous Chinese landmark on the back of their flag.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly locate China on the globe when prompted.
- Check that the child successfully recreated the flag pattern with the five stars.
- Listen for the child to name at least one fact about China during the closing discussion.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: reasoning, accuracy, clarity, independence.
