Rock Poetry Workshop
Poetry develops phonological awareness, vocabulary, and creative expression while honouring children's unique voices.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Language Arts
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Compose simple poems about rocks using sensory language
- Identify and use rhyming words
- Present poems orally with expression and confidence
Materials
- Collection of interesting rocks and minerals
- Poetry anthologies with nature poems
- Writing paper shaped like rocks
- Pencils and coloured pens
- Microphone or pretend stage for performances
Instructions
Begin with a sensory exploration of rocks — children touch, observe, and describe them. Read two or three short nature poems aloud, highlighting rhyme, rhythm, and sensory language. Model writing a simple poem about a rock using the senses (I see, I feel, I hear). Invite children to choose their favourite rock and compose their own poem. Conclude with a poetry performance circle.
Educator tip
Painting rocks with words from their poems makes a beautiful display and strengthens the connection between visual art and literacy.
Assessment
Evaluate use of sensory vocabulary, attempts at rhyme or poetic structure, and confidence during oral presentation.
