The River's Journey Story
Narrative writing through a nature lens builds vocabulary, sequencing skills, and creative expression simultaneously.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Language Arts
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Retell a sequential story about a river's journey from mountain to sea
- Use descriptive vocabulary related to water, landscape, and movement
- Create illustrations to accompany their narrative
Materials
- Picture book about rivers (e.g., 'A River' by Marc Martin)
- Story sequencing cards showing a river's journey
- Drawing paper and watercolour paints
- Vocabulary word wall cards
- Audio recording of river sounds
Instructions
Read a picture book about a river's journey, pausing to discuss unfamiliar vocabulary and invite predictions. Play river sounds in the background to create atmosphere. After reading, use sequencing cards to retell the key stages: mountain stream, waterfall, winding river, meeting the sea. Invite children to create their own river journey story, illustrating key moments and dictating or writing captions.
Educator tip
Create a 'river vocabulary wall' that grows throughout the unit. Include words like: trickle, rush, meander, cascade, babble, flow.
Assessment
Assess sequential understanding, use of descriptive vocabulary, and ability to connect illustrations to narrative. Note progression in writing from dictation to independent composition.
