Rock Detectives: Types of Rocks
Hands-on investigation of rocks develops scientific inquiry skills and connects children to the geology beneath their feet.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Rivers, Rocks & Rainbows
- Learning area: Science & Technology
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Identify and classify rocks as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic
- Observe and describe physical properties of rocks using scientific vocabulary
- Conduct simple tests (scratch, water absorption) to compare rock properties
Materials
- Rock samples (granite, sandstone, marble, pumice, slate, limestone)
- Magnifying glasses and hand lenses
- Scratch test materials (coin, nail, fingernail)
- Water and dropper for absorption test
- Classification chart
- Science journals
Instructions
Present children with a mystery bag of rocks and challenge them to become 'rock detectives'. Guide systematic observation: What colour is it? Is it smooth or rough? Does it have layers or crystals? Introduce the three rock types through a simple story about how each forms. Conduct hands-on tests: the scratch test (hardness), the water drop test (absorption), and visual observation (crystal structure, layers). Children classify their samples and record findings in their science journals.
Educator tip
Create a classroom 'rock museum' where children can display their favourite specimens with descriptive labels.
Assessment
Observe children's systematic observation skills, use of scientific vocabulary, and ability to classify based on evidence from tests.
