Verb Tenses: Past, Present, Future
Verb tense understanding is essential for clear communication. Children who control tense can narrate past events, describe present situations, and plan future actions.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Grammar
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Understand verb tense as time indicator
- Conjugate regular verbs in three tenses
- Identify verb tenses in reading
- Use consistent tense in writing
Materials
- Time line strip (yesterday, today, tomorrow)
- Verb conjugation cards
- Sentence strips for tense transformation
- Irregular verb reference chart
Instructions
1. Present timeline: Past—Present—Future. 2. 'Yesterday I walked. Today I walk. Tomorrow I will walk.' 3. Place verb cards on timeline. 4. Practice regular verbs: jump/jumped/will jump. 5. Discover the -ed pattern for past tense. 6. Introduce irregular verbs: go/went/will go. 7. Transform sentences between tenses.
Educator tip
Children naturally use irregular past tenses incorrectly ('I goed,' 'I runned'). Rather than correcting, present the correct form: 'Yes, you went to the park!'
