I Spy Sound Game

Before a child can read, they must hear the sounds that compose spoken words. The I Spy game makes phonemic awareness playful and concrete, meeting the sensitive period for language and building the auditory bridge to the sandpaper letters. Other children's ears naturally reject an object that does not begin with the chosen sound, so the game self-corrects.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Bring a basket of objects to a small mat and name each one with the child. 2. Once the names are secure, lean in with delight and say, 'I spy with my little eye something that begins with /m/… mmmmmouse.' 3. Exaggerate the initial sound. 4. Invite the child: 'Can you spy something that begins with /m/?' 5. Play until all objects are claimed. 6. On another day, introduce a new basket with a different sound. 7. Later, mix sounds within one basket so the child must actively discriminate. 8. Progress to ending sounds, then middle sounds. 9. Extend to objects around the classroom.

Educator tip

Play often and briefly, never as a test. Choose objects whose names have clear initial sounds. Avoid letter-name confusion — say /m/ (the sound), not 'em' (the letter name).

Assessment

Note whether the child spontaneously isolates sounds in their own speech and recognizes initial sounds in new words across days.
