Pink Series — Phonetic Object Boxes
After the child has learned to compose words with the moveable alphabet, they are ready to read. The Pink Series offers the simplest phonetic words paired with concrete objects to confirm meaning. If the card does not describe the object, the child rereads and corrects — the object is the control.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Reading
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Read short phonetic three-letter words independently
- Match a written word to a concrete object
- Experience reading as decoding rather than guessing
- Progress from concrete object to picture to list
Materials
- Pink Series Object Box 1: miniatures with phonetic names (cat, pig, pin, cup, jet, bus) and corresponding word cards printed in lowercase on pink paper
- Small mat
Instructions
1. Lay the mat. 2. Arrange the miniature objects in a row along the top of the mat. 3. Pick up a word card and read it silently or under your breath: /c/ /a/ /t/ — 'cat.' 4. Place it beneath the cat. 5. Invite the child to choose the next card. 6. Continue until every word is placed beneath its object. 7. Verify together by reading each pair. 8. Pack cards into their envelope and objects into the box. 9. Later, present with pictures instead of objects, and later still with word lists only.
Educator tip
Never read the words aloud before the child does. This is their moment of reading — let the decoding happen on its own.
Assessment
Observe whether decoding is smooth, whether the child self-corrects, and at what speed words are read after repetition.
