Metal Insets

The metal insets are the direct preparation for writing. The hand, already familiar with the shape from the geometric cabinet, now learns to control the pencil along its edge. Lines that stray outside the boundary or gaps in the fill are visible on the paper, so each stroke is self-assessed and the grip adjusts naturally toward lightness and precision.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Bring the tray, a frame, an inset, and paper to a table. 2. Place the frame squarely on the paper. 3. With a pencil, trace the inner edge of the frame. 4. Remove the frame and set it aside. 5. Place the inset figure exactly over the traced outline and, with a second color, trace its outer edge. 6. Remove the inset. 7. Fill the enclosed shape with long, parallel, touching lines from one edge to the other without crossing the boundary. 8. Examine the finished design. 9. Over weeks, combine frames, introduce new fill patterns, and add borders.

Educator tip

Teach the fingers to hold the pencil correctly during the first lessons; the grip formed here will carry over to writing. Keep pencils sharp so the line stays true.

Assessment

Observe grip, line lightness, staying within the boundary, and how the child invents designs over time.
