Large Moveable Alphabet

The moveable alphabet separates the composition of words from the physical challenge of writing. Freed from the pencil, the child can record thought as soon as they know the sounds. The child rereads their own word — if it does not say what was intended, they self-correct. This is the doorway to total reading: the child writes before they read.

Objectives

Materials

• Large wooden box with compartments for each letter of the alphabet, vowels in blue and consonants in red
• Small mat or rug
• Basket of phonetic objects or pictures

Instructions

1. Place the alphabet box on a mat and open it. 2. Select a small object from the basket, e.g., a cat. 3. Say the word slowly, isolating each sound: /c/ /a/ /t/. 4. For each sound, retrieve the matching letter and place it on the rug from left to right. 5. Admire the finished word. 6. Repeat with a second object. 7. Invite the child to choose an object and build its word independently. 8. As confidence grows, allow them to build words they think of without any basket. 9. Collect the letters and return them to the box to close the cycle.

Educator tip

Accept phonetic spelling fully at this stage; do not correct to standard spelling. 'Lik' for 'like' is a triumph, not an error — standardization comes after reading has opened.

Assessment

Note the range of words the child composes spontaneously and whether they reread their own work without prompting.
